What’s the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?

The addition of alloys is often done on steel to enhance its desired properties. Steel that has been treated as marine grade commonly referred to as Type 316, is resistant to harsh environments.

There are numerous types of stainless-steel 316. Most commonly used are L F, N, and H variations. Each has its own distinct characteristics, and serves the same purpose. L is a reference to 316L steel having low carbon levels, below 316.

312, 316, and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality

Although they’re similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, Type 316 and 316L both are more resistant to corrosion and have greater strength at high temperatures. Additionally, they aren’t able to be made harder through heat treatment, and they can be easily bent and stretched.

The difference between 316 and Stainless Steel

The stainless steel 316L has less carbon than 316. Although it has a smaller carbon percentage, 316L is very similar with 316 in practically every way. The cost is comparable they are both tough and resistant to corrosion, which makes an ideal choice for extreme stress situations.

However, for projects that require a lot the use of welding, then 316L may be a better choice due to the fact that 316 is more susceptible to corrosion from welding rather than the other 316L (corrosion inside the weld). But, the 316 is able to be annealed to resist the attenuation of welding. 316L is also a very suitable stainless steel for high temperature, high corrosion processes This is why it is used in construction and Marine projects.

There is no 316 or 316L is the most affordable option. The 304 is comparable to the 304L but the price is less. Neither is as durable as the 317 or 317L, which have more molybdenum in them and better overall corrosion resistance.
