Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is an inorganic compound with the formula Cu2O, one of the principal oxides of copper. It is a red-coloured solid and a component of some antifouling paints.
The oxidation state of copper in this compound is +1, which is the intermediate oxidation state. It is a monoclinic crystal. The structure is similar to that of tin and is a good candidate for pyrotechnic use as an oxygen-boosting spark ingredient in fireworks.
Formulations and applications:
It is a reagent, catalyst, and an effective anti-corrosive. It is used in manufacturing and process control as well as in the construction industry, especially for water treatment. It is a common additive to laundry detergent and toothpaste.
Fireworks:
It has been used in the fireworks industry since the late 1800s as a key ingredient in sparks, smoke and pyrotechnic color. It increases the amount of oxygen logarithmically and is a common additive to spark mixtures.
Antifouling coatings:
It is used as an antifouling material for vinyl antifouling coatings, which have been in use since the 1940s. These coatings consist of a binder of vinyl and wood rosin, which is then coated with a layer of cuprous oxide to prevent fouling.
The slurry from the rotating reactor is removed to a flocculation tank 14 where it is mixed with a flocculent. The flocculated slurry is then passed through path 16 to a settling tank 18.
