Zinc is a metal with many useful properties, including strength and corrosion resistance. It’s often used as a coating, but it can also be mixed with other metals to make alloys. One of the most common is aluminum-zinc, which has many uses in a variety of industries. The aluminum-zinc alloy formula is called Zamak, and it’s often used in die casting, which is a process where the alloy is melted and then injected into a mold to create different shapes. It’s also used in automotive parts, machine components and toys. The alloy has excellent tensile and yield strength, but its corrosion resistance is especially useful in many applications.

The metallographic structure of the high-aluminum zinc alloy is mainly composed of primary a (Al) dendrites and dendritic edge a + e (Zn+Cu) ternary eutectoids, as shown in Figure 1. The as-cast microstructure of the alloy has a fairly refined structure and black and white colors, with the eutectoids having a very distinct morphology and shape.

It is possible to improve the tribological properties of the high-aluminum-zinc alloy by reducing the Cu content to 3-5 wt.%, which is achieved by partial substitution with Ti and/or Mn. However, this degrades the fatigue properties of the alloy.
