Iron Nitride, also known as Fe2N is a magnetic, hard, white solid that has high corrosion resistance and can be made into various grades depending on application. It is produced as a standard material and available in bulk, submicron, and nanopowder forms. American Elements produces to many standard grades when applicable, including Mil Spec (military grade); ACS, Reagent and Technical Grade; Food, Agricultural and Pharmaceutical Grade; and Optical Grade. American Elements can also produce materials to custom specifications and follow applicable ASTM testing standards.

This article explores the kinetics of microstructure evolution during thermochemical treatment with gaseous nitriding, salt-bath nitrocarburising and plasma nitriding. The influence of nitriding potential and temperature on the nucleation of g’-nitride at the iron surface and the development of the compound layer is investigated. In particular, the effect of nitrogen on the decomposition of nitride and nitrocarburised layers and the competition between nitrogen uptake and carbon uptake in the compound layer are studied.

Mossbauer spectroscopy allows the identification of different Fe sites in the phase. The results show that the spectrum can be fitted by three Lorentzian sextets, corresponding to different arrangements of Fe atoms in the compound. The different arrangements of Fe atoms are also identified by their magnetic properties. The results demonstrate the capability of Mossbauer spectroscopy for site determination in iron nitride and other complex crystalline phases.
