In detergent formuations, sodium metasilicate anhydrous is a multifunctional ingredient that shows excellent pH-regulating capacity, efficient detergency, bleach stabilizing and dirt dispersing properties. It is also a good wetting agent, deflocculating and holding inorganic materials in suspension. It also protects metal surfaces from corrosion and is an excellent buffer that prevents large changes in pH.

sodium metasilicate anhydrous is hygroscopic and deliquescent and is insoluble in acids, alcohols and salt solutions. It reacts violently with acid and is corrosive to aluminium and zinc. It produces a fire hazard when mixed with acids and is explosive when in contact with halogens such as hydrogen chloride. It is also irritating to the eyes and skin. sodium metasilicate anhydrous is soluble in water, but does not dissolve in ethanol. It crystallizes from solution as a variety of hydrates, with the most common forms being Sodium Metasilicate Pentahydrate and Sodium Metasilicate Nonahydrate.
