anti rust additive is used in paints, lubricants and other liquids to prevent corrosion of metal surfaces. Corrosion is an oxidation-reduction chemical process which leads to the degradation of iron and other ferrous metals, such as steel. It can result in deterioration of the structural integrity of the metal and also affect its appearance. It can occur when the metal is exposed to moisture, salt, air and other contaminants. Corrosion can be prevented by coating the surface of the metal with a protective film. Several methods are available to accomplish this, including pre-treatments that improve the surface of the metal, change to non-metallic materials, use a sacrificial anode and incorporating an effective corrosion inhibitor in the paint formulation.
Adding an anti-rust additive is essential for most lubricants because rust is one of the most common causes of premature failure of a lubricant system. Rust inhibitors protect metals by physically adsorbing onto the surface of the metal and blocking oxygen from reaching the metal’s pores. They are usually added to lubricants in the form of an emulsion of oil in water and may be referred to as rust-preventatives or rust inhibitors.
A good example of an anti-rust additive is PLUSCO 304 Hydrostatic Corrosion Inhibitor Additive. This product is a safety solvent-based mineral oil blend with efficient organic rust inhibitors and water-displacing agents. It is recommended for the rust prevention of tubular goods during hydrostatic testing and is cold ready to use. It will not stain bright or polished steel and provides effective corrosion protection during brief periods of outdoor exposure. The residual film is fingerprint-suppressing and easily removed using alkaline cleaning solutions or by solvent degreasing. It is also compatible with aluminum and engine oil, making it an excellent choice for the rust protection of internal automotive components.
