AlB2 is the chemical formula of this binary compound, which is formed from aluminum and boran. Aluminum diboride has a red color under normal pressure and temperature.
Aluminum boride (also known as AlB12) is a compound of aluminum and boran. AlB12 has a specific weight of 2,55 (18degC) and is a monoclinic, shiny black crystal. It is insoluble with water, alkali or acid. Nitric acid hot decomposes it. It is produced by melting together boron, sulfur and aluminium.
The structure is similar to that of magnesium diboride. The metallic conductivity of single crystals of aluminium diboride is parallel to the hexagonal surface of the substrate.
Aluminum boride’s structure is similar to other intermetallics, and it depends more on the crystallization of aluminum metal than its valence. Aluminum borides consist of AlB2, AlB4, AlB12 and their valence relationship.
Two simple substances with a melting point above 600 can react to form aluminum diboride AlB2. This is a multi-layered structure. Al atoms are directly overlapping (A mode) and B atoms have been filled into the triangular pillars created by the direct overlapping of Al atoms.
