magnesium blocks are a great way to give your cattle a source of magnesium. They also help to protect against grass staggers in Spring. They can be fed to all livestock, sheep and goats, dairy cows and horses.
Magnesium (Mg) is an essential mineral for many animals and plants, including humans. It is involved in a number of biological functions, and a high intake is needed for good health. Several diseases have been associated with low dietary magnesium intake, and habitually low intakes can induce changes in biochemical pathways that increase the risk of disease over time. These include hypertension and cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and migraine headaches.
It is a cationic ion and is used in the nervous system to block voltage-dependent sodium channels in neurons. Intracellular Mg2+ blocks tail currents through these channels in a manner that is dependent on both the concentration of the ion and the voltage of activation. It is also known that magnesium can attenuate central sensitization after nociceptive stimuli, and reduce pain sensitivity by blocking the NMDA receptor.
Numerous clinical studies have shown that magnesium has beneficial effects in patients suffering from neuropathic pain, dysmenorrhea, tension headache and migraine attacks. These effects are attributed to its blockage of the NMDA receptor, attenuation of central sensitization and muscle relaxing effects. Magnesium may also improve sleep quality by increasing the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA and modulating the stress response. In addition, it reduces the release of catecholamines during endotracheal intubation and prevents a hypertensive response during surgery.
